Elijah Lewis murder sentence 35 years

Seattle, WALocal News

Patrick Cooney, aged 37, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for murdering community leader Elijah Lewis and injuring his 9-year-old nephew during a road rage incident in April 2023. Judge Sean O’Donnell issued a 25-year sentence, plus an additional 10 years for the use of a firearm in the crime. Cooney's defense team argued for a lesser sentence based on claims of self-defense and his PTSD, but the judge rejected these arguments. Lewis's family expressed no sympathy for Cooney, urging others to honor Elijah's legacy by pursuing their passions. Lewis, remembered as a dedicated community builder and entrepreneur, was 23 at the time of his death.

Video evidence from the scene showed Cooney shooting into Lewis's vehicle. Cooney had a troubling history of road rage incidents involving firearms, including threats made to other drivers. This case highlights ongoing issues of road rage and gun violence in urban areas.
