The fallen willow at Streissguth Gardens

Seattle, WALocal News

The historic willow tree at Streissguth Gardens in Seattle fell during a wet snowfall, prompting cleanup efforts from community volunteers. Ben Streissguth estimates the tree was around 80 years old, having been part of the gardens since his youth. He and others have dedicated 120 hours to restoring the area, and a fallen maple tree has also been repurposed for new garden projects. Local residents have shared their memories of the willow, with one individual even dedicating a podcast episode to it. Ideas for the future of the space include leaving the tree in place, creating a staircase through it, or building a walkway over it.

The community has expressed a mix of mourning for the loss of shade and excitement for new planting opportunities. Streissguth has also engaged in vegetative cutting to replant offspring of the willow. The gardens hold historical significance, stemming from Streissguth's parents' personal gardens.
