First Hill-born Sugar Bakery adding sweet new Capitol Hill cafe

Sugar Bakery is set to open a new location in Capitol Hill, breathing life into a space left vacant by Cherry Street Coffee's closure. Since 2016, the bakery has operated in First Hill, where Quynh La took over after founder Stephanie Crocker retired. The new cafe will offer an assortment of baked goods, sandwiches, and coffee, along with plants for sale. Cherry Street Coffee's owner, Ali Ghambari, opted to close the cafe following a labor dispute and a worker strike. Joy Hollingsworth, the District 3 representative, withdrew a proposal that would have impacted small businesses like Cherry Street.

This decision contributed to the closure, allowing Sugar Bakery to step in and revitalize the location. The bakery, which will celebrate 20 years of business in 2026, signifies ongoing growth in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. More details regarding the opening date will be announced soon.
