Garfield Super Block design taking shape for 2025 construction with Pillars of Promise artists selection, community open house
Seattle Parks will hold a community open house on Thursday to provide updates on the Garfield Super Block project, which has an $8. 4 million budget. The project is designed to enhance public art and renovate the park, having reached a 60% design milestone. Construction is now scheduled for 2025, moving from its initial summer start date. The Garfield Super Block Coalition is committed to honoring the neighborhood's diverse history through eight public art pieces, with artists selected for the core work, Pillars of Promise.
This artwork will celebrate the contributions of seven cultural groups, including the Duwamish and African-American communities. The coalition is raising private funds for the artwork while public dollars fund the park renovations. Key city officials, including Councilmembers Kshama Sawant and Teresa Mosqueda, have facilitated budget amendments to support the project. Additional park features will include a parkour area, marking a first for the city.
