City Council gives Acer House development rezone OK at 23rd and Cherry
The Seattle City Council approved a surgical rezone for the Acer House development at 23rd and Cherry, allowing the building height to increase from the existing 40-foot limit to 55 feet. The project will consist of 114 apartments, with 30% designated for low-income residents in compliance with the Mandatory Housing Affordability and Multifamily Tax Exemption requirements. In addition to housing, Acer House will include thousands of square feet for childcare services and retail spaces, potentially featuring the local Black-owned florist, Flowers Just 4 U. The development is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the Garfield Super Block, enhancing the area around Garfield High School with new amenities and pedestrian pathways. Urban Black’s Kateesha Atterberry highlighted the project's focus on integrating childcare facilities, aiming to address community needs.
The design is inspired by Afrofuturism, marking a unique architectural approach for the neighborhood. This project aligns with Seattle’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive and sustainable urban development. The city’s decision reflects its commitment to balancing growth with community needs.
