Seattle City Council approves expansion of traffic safety camera program

The Seattle City Council unanimously passed legislation to expand automated traffic safety cameras in high-risk areas, including parks and school zones. This initiative aims to reduce speeding and enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. Councilmember Saka highlighted that increased camera usage is essential for protecting all travelers. The bill establishes a fund to allocate revenue from traffic infractions to traffic safety and Vision Zero programs, which aim to eliminate traffic deaths by 2030. If signed by Mayor Bruce Harrell, the new ordinance will take effect 30 days afterward.

The city also plans to double the number of school zone safety cameras this year to further promote safety. Officials believe this expansion will deter speeders and improve neighborhood safety. The initiative reflects Seattle's commitment to reducing traffic-related incidents.
