Council weighs in on Seattle Police pursuit mitigation GPS tracker launchers
The Seattle City Council's public safety committee reviewed a proposal to integrate StarChase GPS pursuit technology into police vehicles, backed by a $250,000 grant from the WA State Department of Commerce. This technology aims to decrease high-speed chases by allowing police to track vehicles involved in crimes without the risks associated with direct pursuit. If the council approves the acquisition, 25 patrol vehicles will be outfitted with GPS tracker launchers, and all sworn officers will be trained in their use. The system combines small GPS cylinders that adhere to a vehicle's exterior with launchers that can be mounted or handheld. The ongoing maintenance cost for the 25 launchers is projected at $37,500 annually.
Additionally, the committee will address a proposed ordinance that seeks to simplify the investigation process for complaints against the Chief of Police, which has become cumbersome since the 2022 updates. The Office of Police Accountability has reported receiving over 70 complaints naming the chief, indicating a pressing need for procedural changes. This discussion reflects ongoing efforts to enhance police accountability and public safety practices in Seattle.
