UW leadership condemns violent pro-Palestinian protest, denounces antisemitism claims

Seattle, WALocal News

The University of Washington's administration condemned a violent protest at the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building, which led to over $1 million in damages and the suspension of 21 students. President Ana Mari Cauce asserted that the protest was not peaceful, stating, “There is no argument about whether it was a peaceful protest. ” In total, 34 individuals were arrested during the protest, which aimed to compel the university to divest from Boeing, a significant donor to the building's construction. The university has initiated a review of federal grants and contracts in light of the events. Federal authorities are now investigating claims of antisemitism linked to the protest.

Tamaki, the Board of Regents Chair, voiced the necessity for greater political diversity at the university. He remarked on the polarization in society and advocated for exposure to different viewpoints. The UW leadership's response underscores the tension between activism and institutional values.
