Shannon Braddock steps in as King County executive, tackles sanctuary city challenges

Seattle, WALocal News

Shannon Braddock has stepped into the role of King County executive, succeeding Dow Constantine, who left to head Sound Transit. As she navigates her new responsibilities, Braddock faces challenges from the Trump administration, which threatens to cut federal funding for municipalities categorized as sanctuary cities. She plans to propose creating a reserve fund to prepare for potential federal impacts and maintain legal defenses against unconstitutional actions. Her 200-day plan prioritizes delivering a balanced budget that preserves vital services and reinvests in behavioral health programs. The county's commitment to addressing homelessness includes millions allocated to the King County Regional Homelessness Authority, despite some criticism regarding the effectiveness of these investments.

Braddock highlighted that five affordable housing projects have resulted in 841 new units in the past year. Additionally, she has reorganized the administration of the KCRHA to streamline operations. Braddock confirmed that she does not plan to pursue election for the executive seat this fall.
