Seattle labor officials mark International Workers Day with door-to-door outreach
Seattle's May Day 2025 will focus on a rally at Cal Anderson Park, emphasizing support for workers and immigrants. The Office of Labor Standards (OLS) will conduct door-to-door outreach, featuring Mayor Bruce Harrell and Council President Sara Nelson. This outreach marks the seventh anniversary of the initiative, which has returned $46 million in remedies to 91,626 workers since its establishment. The minimum wage, now adjusted to $20. 76 an hour, celebrates ten years since its overhaul, alongside the implementation of the Wage Theft Ordinance.
This ordinance has resulted in 320 investigations and $11. 2 million in remedies for workers affected by wage theft. Recently, the city faced its own wage theft lawsuit related to payroll system issues. Thousands are expected to gather at rallies nationwide, with Seattle's event reflecting a coalition of unions and community organizations. The outreach efforts will begin at the Chinese Information Service Center, underscoring the city's commitment to worker education.
