5-year-old exposed to fentanyl at Renton home
A 5-year-old boy in Renton was hospitalized following accidental exposure to fentanyl in his home, raising serious concerns about child safety. The boy's father brought him to the emergency room, explaining his lethargic state and admitting to fentanyl use. Investigators found that drug paraphernalia was left within reach of the boy and three other children aged 2, 11, and 13. Detectives have referred reckless endangerment charges against the father, pending a decision from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The Renton Police Department warns that even a minute amount of fentanyl can be deadly, particularly for young children.
Experts advise that households with fentanyl should have Naloxone (Narcan) available to counteract potential overdoses. Symptoms of fentanyl overdose can manifest quickly, including slow or no breathing, drowsiness, and pinpoint pupils. The children involved have been removed from the unsafe environment, highlighting the urgent need for drug awareness and prevention measures.
