A jury convicted Patrick Cooney of second-degree murder and assault in the shooting death of Elijah Lewis on Capitol Hill. The shooting occurred on April 1, 2023, when Cooney, riding a rental electric scooter, opened fire on Lewis's vehicle as he picked up his young nephew. Security video evidenced Cooney's actions, which resulted in Lewis's fatal injury and the child's injury. Lewis, a 23-year-old community builder known for his entrepreneurial spirit and advocacy work, was later pronounced dead at Harborview Medical Center. King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion praised the jury's decision and reiterated her sympathies for Lewis's family.

The total sentencing range for Cooney’s convictions, including firearm enhancements, is between 336 to 463 months. The sentencing date is set for March 14, 2025, but may be postponed. This case highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence and community safety in the area.
