Good vibrations? WSDOT says construction underway for seven-year 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid project

Seattle, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has officially commenced construction on the SR-520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid project, with piledriving activities starting the week of November 4. Crews will primarily utilize impact hammers for this phase, which runs six days a week from November 2024 to April 2025, during hours that extend into the evenings and weekends. This initial season is crucial, as it marks the first of six planned piledriving seasons, with the subsequent seasons expected to have less impact. WSDOT has noted that vibratory hammers will be permitted year-round, resulting in ongoing vibrations felt by nearby residents. Additionally, there will be intermittent nighttime work to accommodate project timelines.

The $1. 4 billion project's timeline remains on track for completion by 2031, despite earlier delays. Community engagement is vital, and residents are encouraged to contact the project's 24-hour hotline for any inquiries. The project aims to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in the Seattle area, offering long-term benefits to local transit and community accessibility.
