Burwell House of Millionaires Row set to become Capitol Hills latest landmark

Seattle, WALocal News

The Seattle Landmarks Board is gearing up to review the Burwell House for landmark designation, a step that underscores the importance of preserving historical architecture on Capitol Hill’s Millionaire’s Row. This potential designation comes after the successful nomination of the property earlier this winter, reflecting a growing appreciation for Seattle's architectural heritage. Built in 1904, the house spans 6,570 square feet and is strategically located near other designated landmarks, contributing to the area's historical landscape. The street itself was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2022, emphasizing its significance. Should the board approve the designation, it would initiate a review process for any major architectural changes, ensuring the preservation of its historic elements.

Additionally, the designation would qualify the property for grants and a tax credit on rehabilitation costs, providing financial incentives for its upkeep. Current owners Bryce and Chris Seidl, who purchased the house in 1994, are committed to maintaining its historical integrity. Historians regard the Burwell House as one of the finest examples of Craftsman-style architecture remaining in Seattle.
