Dont let new 520 bikewalk bridge get lost in the Montlake Lids sea of cars Opening celebration Saturday

Seattle, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is set to celebrate the opening of a new bike and pedestrian bridge across the SR-520, inviting the community to enjoy a “walk/roll” event this Saturday. This bridge, strategically located just east of the nearly completed Montlake lid, addresses the car-centric nature of the $455. 3 million Montlake Project, which has faced years of construction delays and increased traffic congestion. Designed exclusively for non-motorized users, the bridge provides a vital north-south connection across the freeway, linking to the SR 520 Trail and Lake Washington Boulevard. The opening celebration promises music, refreshments, and engaging activities, emphasizing the bridge's role in enhancing community connectivity.

The Seattle Bike Blog reports that this event will bring much-needed relief to residents tired of navigating detours through ongoing construction. This bridge marks a significant milestone, coming eight years after a similar community event for the new 520 bridge before it opened to vehicle traffic. WSDOT is also moving into the third and final phase of the 520 replacement project, with future developments planned to bolster local infrastructure. The overall completion timeline for the entire project remains slated for 2031, ensuring continued improvements for the Montlake area.
