Des Moines company fined 166K after storage tank explosions severely burn workers

Seattle, WALocal News

Calhoun Tanks & Services, Inc. , based in Des Moines, is facing a fine of $166,423 from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) after two workers were severely burned in a pair of explosions. The incidents occurred during the inspection of an 18,000-gallon underground propane tank at a resort, with the first explosion triggered by a propane leak from cut piping. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the initial explosion, but work continued without any changes to safety protocols. Two hours later, a second explosion occurred when crews removed the tank cover, causing another leak that ignited, resulting in severe burns to two workers.

One employee, who suffered burns to 30% of his body, spent over a month in the ICU, while the other was treated and released the same day. L&I cited Calhoun Tanks for knowingly disregarding safety rules and inadequate training, emphasizing that these workers will bear lifelong scars due to the employer's negligence. The fines collected will contribute to the workers’ compensation supplemental pension fund. Calhoun Tanks is currently appealing the decision made by L&I.
