Former Army sergeant swept away in Carbon River recovery effort hampered by rough terrain

Seattle, WALocal News

Zuleika Witron, a 28-year-old former U. S. Army sergeant, fell into the Carbon River in Pierce County, Washington, while walking with her girlfriend and dog. The dog was successfully rescued downstream, but Witron remains missing. Search teams face significant difficulties due to the river's treacherous conditions, including steep canyon walls and swift currents filled with debris.

Kiara, Witron's sister, described the panic that ensued as she attempted to rescue her sister from the slippery rocks. Family members are calling for increased volunteer support, particularly as the search has shifted towards a recovery mission. Despite the challenges, local community members and service personnel from Joint Base Lewis-McChord are committed to finding her. Kiara expressed hope for closure, stating, "I just hope that we can find something. " The situation remains urgent, reflecting the emotional toll it has taken on Witron's family and friends.
