Seattle Department of Transportation 1.55B levy plan includes Broadway safety improvements, E Union Revival, and transit safety
The Seattle City Council's transportation committee is preparing to hear a report on the city's ambitious $1. 55 billion levy, which was approved by voters in November, aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure over the next eight years. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has outlined a comprehensive plan to allocate $177 million from the levy in 2025, focusing on critical safety improvements and transit enhancements. Notably, $16 million will be dedicated to high-collision safety projects at various intersections, including Broadway and Pike, and Broadway and Union. The SDOT is also set to initiate planning for a new "12th Ave S Safety Corridor" and improvements under the "Safe Routes to School Program.
" In addition, the plan includes projects to create dedicated bus lanes and protected bike lanes, aimed at improving transit connectivity. SDOT emphasizes community engagement through "People Street Projects" to activate business districts and public spaces. Furthermore, the council seeks a report by June 2nd on implementing transit security improvements, reflecting a growing concern for rider safety. Seattle's pedestrian fatality rate, while lower than many cities, still exceeds the “Vision Zero” goal, underscoring the urgency of these initiatives.
