Person arrested after throwing Smarte Carte over mezzanine railing at SEA Airport

Seattle, WALocal News

A man was arrested for felony assault after he threw a Smarte Carte luggage cart over the railing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport early Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 4:30 a. m. on March 9, when the suspect, who had no legitimate reason to be at the airport, launched the cart from the mezzanine above checkpoint 3. Thankfully, the cart landed next to an empty document check stand, resulting in no injuries to passengers or airport staff.

Although the Smarte Carte itself was damaged, there was no harm to the floor or other Port or TSA property, allowing airport operations to return to normal within about 10 minutes. The case has been filed with the King County Prosecutors, who will pursue legal action against the suspect. This incident highlights potential security vulnerabilities in busy transportation hubs such as SEA Airport. Authorities may need to assess measures to prevent similar occurrences and ensure passenger safety. The quick response and lack of injuries demonstrate effective emergency protocols in place at the airport.
