Transit Safety and Security Task Force to take early focus on physical barriers to protect drivers, safety at bus stops
The King County Metro Transit Safety and Security Task Force is launching a comprehensive approach to improve safety for transit drivers and passengers. The task force will focus on several initiatives, including the installation of physical barriers on buses to protect operators and strategies to enforce conduct regulations at bus stops. This initiative is particularly timely following the tragic murder of transit operator Shawn Yim, which has intensified calls for enhanced security measures. The task force's first meeting is scheduled for March 20, 2025, and will include stakeholders from various sectors, including public safety and transportation. Regular meetings will take place through spring 2025, with an accountability report expected in September to assess progress.
The collaboration aims to improve response times and the overall perception of safety on public transit systems. Engaging the community and fostering interagency cooperation are critical components of the task force’s mission. These efforts reflect a proactive stance on public safety in the wake of recent tragic events.
