Inclusivity, equity, and accessibility Seattle Parks working with Central District partners to plan 2.3M Judkins Park renovation

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle Parks is collaborating with community organizations, including the Africatown Community Land Trust, to revitalize Judkins Park with a $2. 3 million renovation aimed at promoting inclusivity, equity, and accessibility. This project responds to the Central District's historical challenges with redlining and displacement, emphasizing the need for intentional community-focused improvements. A community engagement meeting is scheduled for February 27, 2025, allowing residents to contribute their ideas for new amenities like an inclusive playground and nature sensory area. The city's announcement highlights the significance of leveraging public-private partnerships to maximize community benefits.

While planning and design funding is secured, construction will depend on acquiring additional financial support, as the project team actively seeks grants and fundraising opportunities. Judkins Park is a vital space for various community activities, and its renovation comes amid broader changes in the area, including the forthcoming light rail service at Judkins Park Station. The community feedback process is expected to last three months, with design completion projected for summer and construction slated to begin in 2026. Some areas of the park will be closed during the renovation, which will introduce new features expected to enhance the park's utility for all residents.
