Madison apartment project goes back to drawing board

Seattle, WALocal News

The mixed-use apartment project at 1222 E. Madison, located on Capitol Hill, is back for its second design review after the initial proposal was rejected last month. Concerns from the review board centered on the design of the corner at 13th and Madison, particularly criticizing the concave entryway. The board has requested that the developers, led by Bellevue-based Baylis Architects, consider more asymmetrical shapes to improve the overall aesthetic of the building. The project aims to provide affordable workforce housing, addressing a critical need in the community.

Changes to the design also include a reduction in the size of retail spaces, which will allow for more smaller shops, enhancing local business opportunities. This revised proposal reflects the developers' responsiveness to community feedback and aims to balance functionality with visual appeal. The board is set to evaluate the new design at a public hearing tonight at the Montlake Library, a key venue for community engagement. As Seattle continues to grapple with housing affordability, this project represents a significant effort to meet the demand for accessible living options in the area.
