A decade of development, affordability, and theater at Capitol Hills 12th Ave Arts
Celebrating a decade of service, Capitol Hill’s 12th Ave Arts has become a cornerstone of affordable living and local theater since opening in 2014. The development features 88 affordable apartments above office spaces for nonprofits, alongside two adaptable theater spaces managed by Black Box. With nearly 6,000 square feet of performance space, the venue allows for a diverse range of productions, drawing in both resident companies and one-time renters. However, attendance has waned following the pandemic, as audiences gravitate towards streaming services, prompting concerns from management about the future of live performance. Greg Carter, the administrative director, highlights the unique engagement of live theater, which offers an experience distinct from digital entertainment.
Plans for revitalizing the lobby with art and seating aim to enhance the visitor experience and encourage ticket sales. The venue's flexibility and community-centric approach are seen as key to its ongoing success, despite the challenges it faces. As it moves forward, 12th Ave Arts continues to embody the spirit of collaboration and creativity within the Seattle arts scene.
