Cases representing Madison Valley, Mount Baker, Hawthorne Hills, and 73 remaining Southern resident killer whales join Friends of Madison Park appeal against city growth plan

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle's proposed growth plan update is under fire as five new appeals have been filed, calling for an extensive environmental review process. These appeals, which include voices from Madison Valley, Mount Baker, and Hawthorne Hills, join a previous appeal from the Friends of Madison Park, highlighting significant community concerns. The appeals argue for a supplemental environmental impact study that assesses a reasonable range of alternatives to mitigate adverse effects on neighborhoods situated along Lake Washington. The urgency of this matter is underscored by the requirements of state law HB 1110, which aims to eliminate single-family zoning in a bid to address the ongoing housing crisis in Washington State. If Seattle fails to finalize its growth plan by June, it risks being governed by state land use codes.

Public hearings are slated for April and May, providing a platform for residents to express their views. Joy Hollingsworth, chair of the Seattle City Council's comprehensive update committee, is spearheading the city's efforts to balance housing needs with community concerns. The outcome of these appeals could shape the future of zoning and development in Seattle, making the issue particularly critical for local stakeholders.
