Armed man shot by police during beach altercation in Des Moines

On February 14, 2025, a significant police shooting occurred in Des Moines, Washington, when an armed man was shot during an altercation on a nearby beach. The incident unfolded around 4:45 p. m. when the man, aged 58, was reported to have threatened himself and his family with a firearm, prompting a rapid police response. Kent police, who were assisting Des Moines officers, utilized drones to locate the suspect, ultimately finding him on the beach.

During the confrontation, a Kent police officer discharged their weapon, injuring the man, who was then given immediate medical attention. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. Additionally, one officer sustained injuries during the incident but was not involved in the shooting itself. As per standard protocol, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the Valley Independent Investigative Team conducts an investigation. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding mental health crises and police response protocols in emergency situations.
