Suspect charged with murder in shooting over scooter at 12th and Spruce encampment

In a tragic incident at a homeless encampment on 12th Avenue in Seattle, William Bender has been charged with second-degree murder following the shooting of Carl Hatfield. The confrontation arose over a dispute regarding an electric scooter, which Hatfield allegedly took from Bender. Witnesses reported that Hatfield was shot in the back while riding the scooter after confronting Bender, who had been trying to sell it. Despite attempts by the Seattle Fire Department to save him, Hatfield died shortly after reaching a nearby truck for assistance. Bender, who has a criminal record that includes multiple arrests for various offenses, is currently being held on a $2 million bail.

During an interview after his arrest, he denied shooting Hatfield but acknowledged a physical altercation took place. Police have gathered evidence, including witness statements and security footage from the area, to support the prosecution's case. The incident highlights ongoing issues related to crime and safety within the city's encampments, raising concerns among local residents and officials.
