Seattle Police Investigating First East Precinct Homicide of 2025 After Man Dies in Shooting Near Youth Jail Campus UPDATE Arrest

Seattle, WALocal News

In a troubling start to the year, Seattle Police are investigating the first homicide of 2025 in the East Precinct, following a shooting incident near the King County Youth Services facility. At approximately 4:30 AM on February 1, officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a man lying on E Spruce with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Despite the quick response from Seattle Fire, the victim was pronounced dead after arriving at Harborview Medical Center. Witnesses described seeing the suspect escape eastbound on an electric scooter, leading to an extensive search for evidence, including shell casings. This incident is particularly significant as it occurs during the first weekend of newly appointed SPD Chief Shon Barnes's tenure, who has previously led the police force in Madison, Wisconsin.

The East Precinct had experienced 14 homicides in 2024, raising concerns about violence in the area. Fortunately, an arrest was made soon after the incident, with a 30-year-old man booked into King County Jail on suspicion of murder. This case underscores ongoing issues related to gun violence in Seattle and the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining community safety.
