New Group Plans to Revitalize Capitol Hill's Century Ballroom with Dances and Classes
Eliza Wilder, an experienced Seattle event producer, is leading a new initiative to save the beloved Century Ballroom in Capitol Hill, which has been a cornerstone of social dance for nearly 30 years. After the current operators, Hallie Kuperman and Alison Cockrill, announced they would not renew their lease, Wilder's group is negotiating a new lease to ensure the venue's legacy continues. The revitalization plan will focus on hosting a variety of dances and classes while also expanding the venue's rental options for events. Wilder, who has a long-standing connection to the ballroom, described the unexpected opportunity as both a challenge and a chance to foster community through dance. Notably, the associated Tin Table restaurant will not continue under the new management, leaving a vacancy that is currently being sought by new businesses.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to support the transition, highlighting the critical need for creative spaces in the neighborhood. As the Century Ballroom prepares for its final anniversary celebration in March, discussions are underway for a transition that may begin as soon as April. The group aims to maintain the ballroom's vibrant atmosphere during renovations, ensuring that the community stays engaged and connected through dance.
