City Council chooses Solomon to fill open International District and South Seattle seat

Seattle, WALocal News

The Seattle City Council has appointed Mark Solomon to fill the District 2 seat, which encompasses the International District and South Seattle, following the resignation of Tammy Morales. Solomon, known for his role as a community crime prevention coordinator with the Seattle Police Department, has stated he will not seek election in November 2025. His immediate focus will be on representing the interests of D2 neighborhoods during the city’s comprehensive plan update and addressing issues related to street disorder in Little Saigon. Morales' departure was prompted by allegations of a toxic work environment, highlighting the challenges within the council. Solomon's committee responsibilities will be confirmed in early February, with expectations that he will handle land use issues previously overseen by Morales.

His political history includes a strong endorsement from The Seattle Times during his unsuccessful 2019 campaign for the same seat, where he lost to Morales by a significant margin. With land use set to be a contentious topic in 2025, Solomon's actions and decisions will be closely monitored. The council's dynamics are shifting, and Solomon's appointment reflects ongoing political changes in Seattle.
