With dancing, events, and a new name, group steps forward with new plan for Capitol Hills Century Ballroom

Seattle, WALocal News

Eliza Wilder, a Seattle event producer, has announced plans to take over Capitol Hill's beloved Century Ballroom, which is at risk of closing after three decades of serving the community. The venue's original owners, Hallie Kuperman and Alison Cockrill, opted not to renew their lease, raising concerns about the future of social dance in the area. Wilder's vision includes securing a new lease for the Grand Ballroom and West Hall, where she intends to host various dance events and classes, thereby revitalizing the local dance scene. Despite the challenges posed by high rent and operational costs, Wilder remains optimistic, stating that sometimes "you just have those really crazy ideas. " The new plans will not extend to the adjacent Tin Table restaurant, prompting a search for a new business to fill that space.

To facilitate this transition, Wilder has launched a fundraiser aimed at supporting the venue's renovation and ensuring its future viability. The community is encouraged to participate, as the importance of access to dance and creative expression has never been more critical. A farewell party for the Century Ballroom is scheduled for March, celebrating its rich history while signaling a new beginning for the venue.
