With dancing, events, and a new name, group steps forward with new plan for Capitol Hills Century Ballroom
The future of Capitol Hill’s Century Ballroom is looking brighter as a new initiative aims to preserve its legacy as a social dance hub. After the current operators, Hallie Kuperman and Alison Cockrill, announced they would not renew their lease, Eliza Wilder, a well-known event producer, has stepped in with a plan to revitalize the venue. With over 15 years of personal experience dancing at Century, Wilder is negotiating a new lease for the Grand Ballroom and West Hall, intending to offer a variety of dance classes and events. The project will not include the adjacent Tin Table restaurant, which is currently seeking new tenants. Wilder's efforts are supported by a community fundraiser to help facilitate the transition, emphasizing the vital role of dance in fostering community connection.
As the venue prepares for a farewell celebration in March, plans are also in motion for a smooth transition starting in April. The initiative reflects a broader trend of preserving cultural spaces amid rising rents and urban development challenges. Community members are optimistic about the new direction and the continuation of a cherished gathering place.
