City of Seattle announces 7M in youth mental health spending
Seattle's recent announcement of a $7 million investment in youth mental health services marks a significant step towards addressing the mental health needs of its young population. This initiative is part of a larger $14. 5 million plan introduced by Mayor Bruce Harrell, which aims to provide intervention and support following the tragic shooting at Garfield High School. The funding will facilitate new partnerships with Talkspace, an online therapy platform, and seven local organizations dedicated to mental health and wellness for youth aged 13 to 24. Services will encompass both in-person and telehealth options, enhancing access to necessary care for middle and high school students.
The initiative aims to launch early in 2025, with a focus on culturally responsive services for diverse communities. Additionally, the city plans to hire 42 new mental health counselors to support students directly in school-based health centers. This comprehensive approach emphasizes the importance of mental health in education and community well-being. The commitment to increasing mental health resources reflects a growing recognition of the challenges faced by young people today.
