Weekend Light Rail Shutdown as Sound Transit Prepares for 2 Line Opening
Another weekend light rail service interruption is set for January 17 to January 19, 2025, affecting the Capitol Hill-SoDo corridor as Sound Transit gears up for the long-awaited 2 Line opening. The temporary suspension of Link light rail operations will allow crews to conduct crucial integrated tests of safety communications equipment, which will include simulations of over 100 emergency scenarios. To accommodate affected passengers, Sound Transit will provide shuttle bus services running every 10-15 minutes throughout the closure. This shutdown is part of a series of disruptions aimed at ensuring a smooth transition to the new 2 Line, which has faced multiple delays since its initial announcement. The current timeline targets a late 2025 opening for the 2 Line, which will connect Seattle to the Eastside across I-90.
Additionally, Sound Transit has implemented a new $3 flat fare system and is working on modernizing its facilities, including elevators and escalators. These improvements reflect Sound Transit’s commitment to enhancing the rider experience amidst ongoing construction challenges. As the region anticipates the completion of the 2 Line, community members remain hopeful for improved transit connectivity.
