Totem pole restoration project delays Pike Place Park opening
The reopening of Victor Steinbrueck Park in Seattle has been delayed due to the restoration of important totem poles, which is expected to extend into 2025. After closing for renovations in December 2022, the park's renovations were completed in November 2024, but it cannot reopen until the totem poles are restored and reinstalled. Local businesses, particularly Pike and Western Wine, have reported a significant decrease in foot traffic, as the park has traditionally attracted visitors seeking scenic views and sunset photography. The closure is mandated by a certificate of approval from the Pike Place Market Historical Commission, emphasizing the cultural importance of the totem poles to Washington's Indigenous community. The project also includes public safety improvements, such as better sight lines and upgraded lighting.
Design elements inspired by Coast Salish culture, including welcome text and a special basket-weave pattern, are integral to the park's renovation. Seattle Parks and Recreation is working to expedite the restoration process to reopen the park as soon as possible. The overall goal is to create a welcoming space that honors the local Native American communities while enhancing safety for all visitors.
