Council President Nelson Introduces Legislation Allowing Workforce Housing in Stadium District
In a significant move for Seattle's urban planning, City Council President Sara Nelson has introduced legislation to allow workforce housing in the Stadium District, which is adjacent to T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field. This initiative aims to create a mixed-use area known as the Stadium Makers’ District, combining residential living with light industrial opportunities. Nelson highlighted the pressing need for affordable housing and local business space, asserting that the legislation could generate tens of thousands of new jobs by transforming the area into an economically viable hub. The proposed Council Bill 120933 will bring the Stadium District in line with the Urban Industrial zone, allowing for the development of small manufacturing storefronts complemented by residential units above. The bill has received backing from various stakeholders, including labor unions and organizations representing neighboring districts like Pioneer Square and Chinatown.
Monty Anderson from the Seattle Building & Construction Trades Council expressed gratitude for the legislative progress, calling the proposal both overdue and essential for community support. The Governance, Accountability, and Economic Development Committee is set to discuss the bill on January 24, with a public hearing scheduled for February 24. This legislation represents a crucial step toward addressing Seattle's housing and economic challenges.
