2 men injured in shooting inside Mount Vernon addiction recovery facility

On December 24, 2024, a double shooting occurred at the New Earth Recovery home in Mount Vernon, Washington, injuring two men. The Mount Vernon Police Department responded to reports of gunfire just before 9 a. m. and found the victims, aged 50 and 53, inside the facility. Both were taken to Skagit Valley Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Authorities arrested a 49-year-old man outside the facility, who is believed to be the shooter, and recovered a firearm as evidence. Alan Muia, the facility's director, expressed relief that the suspect is in custody, highlighting that such an incident is unprecedented in the center's 13 years of operation. Investigators believe they have contacted everyone involved in the shooting, and the suspect now faces serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.
