Tacoma City Council passes budget, adds $2.5 million to maintain fire department staffing

Seattle, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council has approved a budget for 2025-2026 that includes an additional $2. 5 million for the fire department, aimed at maintaining staffing levels and preventing cuts to 16 roving firefighter positions. These positions are vital for covering absences and reducing overtime costs, addressing concerns about firefighter burnout. Firefighter Kris Hampton highlighted the critical nature of these roles for community safety, stating, 'In our line of work, every second matters. ' The decision was well-received by the public and the firefighters' union, who have advocated for the program's continuation.

However, city officials noted that while this funding is a positive step, it only partially addresses the larger issues of underfunding and staffing shortages. Mayor Victoria Woodards mentioned that the budget will help reduce the city's deficit from approximately $24 million to about $15 million, emphasizing the ongoing need for careful financial management.
