Seattle, King County file lawsuit to upend natural gas initiative

Seattle, WALocal News

King County and Seattle have jointly filed a lawsuit against Initiative 2066, which restricts local governments from limiting natural gas use. Although the initiative passed in the recent election, the plaintiffs argue it misled voters and violates Washington's single-subject law. The lawsuit contends that the initiative includes provisions affecting energy efficiency and public health, extending beyond just natural gas. Attorney Paul Lawrence highlighted that the initiative's language suggests a focus solely on natural gas, while its implications are much broader. Industry representatives have criticized the lawsuit as undermining voter intent and democratic principles.

Governor Jay Inslee has also raised constitutional concerns about the initiative, though he is not part of the lawsuit. Previously, the plaintiffs sought intervention from the Attorney General's office, which upheld the initiative's constitutionality. As the case progresses, the future of Initiative 2066 and its impact on Washington's energy policy remains uncertain.
