Boeing lays off nearly 2,200 people in Washington, state reports

Seattle, WALocal News

Boeing's announcement of nearly 2,200 layoffs in Washington state has raised concerns about job security and the local economy. Scheduled for December 20, these permanent layoffs will affect employees across various locations, as noted in a notice to the Washington State Employment Security Department. CEO Kelly Ortberg explained that the layoffs are part of a strategy to align workforce levels with the company's financial realities. The cuts will also include executives and managers, emphasizing the scale of the restructuring. Prior to this, Boeing had warned of a potential 10% reduction in workforce.

Ortberg expressed regret over the decision, acknowledging the challenges it poses for affected families. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) is expected to assist laid-off members in understanding their rights and benefits, highlighting the ongoing difficulties faced by Boeing in a challenging industry landscape.
