Chicago Ordered to Pay Nearly $80 Million for Police Chase That Killed 10-Year-Old Girl

Seattle, WALocal News

A jury in Cook County has awarded $79. 8 million to the family of Da’Karia Spicer, a 10-year-old girl killed during a police chase in Chicago in 2020. The city has acknowledged its liability in the tragic incident, where Da’Karia was traveling in a Honda Accord that was struck by a Mercedes speeding at approximately 90 mph while being pursued by police. Legal representatives for the city argued for a compensation amount between $12 million and $15 million; however, the jury reached a much higher figure after hearing compelling closing arguments. The devastating impact of the loss on the Spicer family was emphasized by attorney Patrick Salvi II, who described Da’Karia as a bright and talented girl who brought light to their lives.

The pursuit, which was criticized for lacking reasonable grounds, raises questions about police chase protocols and their broader implications for community safety. Da’Karia's father was on his way to get her a laptop for remote learning at the time of the crash, highlighting the everyday circumstances that can lead to such tragedies. The city is currently reviewing the verdict and has not issued further comments. This case serves as a crucial reminder of the potential consequences of law enforcement practices in urban environments.
