New motorhomes in WA could be banned in a matter of weeks
Beginning January 1, 2024, Washington State will implement a ban on the sale of new motorhomes and large trucks powered by diesel or gasoline due to stricter emissions regulations modeled after California's standards. These regulations apply to vehicles exceeding 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight, significantly affecting the RV and trucking industries. Sheri Call, CEO of the Washington State Truckers Association, voiced concerns about the disruption within the industry. The new rules stem from California's Zero Emission Vehicle legislation, which Washington committed to follow in 2020 as part of its climate goals. Manufacturers must now meet specific sales targets for zero-emission vehicles, leading to a substantial market shift.
Will Rogers, General Manager at Poulsbo RV, indicated that the full impact of these changes became apparent only in late October, causing confusion among dealers. The regulations have led some manufacturers to withdraw from CARB-regulated markets, raising fears of reduced availability and increased demand for used vehicles. The Washington Department of Ecology has reassured that manufacturers have options to meet production requirements, but the long-term implications of these changes remain a concern for industry stakeholders.
