SR 20 North Cascade Highway closed for season

Seattle, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced the seasonal closure of State Route 20 North Cascade Highway due to severe storm warnings and avalanche risks. This closure impacts a 37-mile stretch of highway from Ross Dam to Silver Star Gate, prioritizing public safety. WSDOT typically reopens this route in late April to early May, depending on winter weather conditions. The highway was first closed on November 15 due to anticipated snowfall, and subsequent evaluations led to the decision for a full seasonal closure. With over 15 inches of snow already recorded and additional precipitation expected, officials deemed it necessary to prioritize safety.

WSDOT communications manager Lauren Loebsack highlighted the importance of winter road safety and noted that road crews will begin snow removal and repairs in the spring. Last season, the highway remained closed until April 19, illustrating the unpredictable nature of winter weather in the region. Drivers are advised to stay informed about road conditions and closures as winter progresses.
