SR 99 traffic snarls expected between Sea-Tac/Des Moines through Summer 2025

Seattle, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced a vital rehabilitation project on State Route 99 (SR 99), set to commence on December 2, 2024, and lasting six months. This project will significantly impact the Sea-Tac Airport and Des Moines area. With an investment of $8. 3 million, the initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety by updating curb ramps to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and resurfacing the road for a smoother driving experience for the 30,000 daily users of this critical transportation corridor. Most work will take place during nighttime hours to minimize disruptions for commuters, although some daytime lane restrictions may be necessary.

This stretch of SR 99 has not been repaved since 2006, making this project long overdue. The WSDOT plans to begin curb work in the winter and focus on resurfacing in the spring, using a durable asphalt mix designed to last approximately 20 years. Travelers are advised to expect minor delays and backups during the project, which will continue into summer 2025, and late-night commuters should prepare for some traffic disruptions as the work progresses.
