Seattle University and Cornish College of the Arts planning to join forces
Seattle University and Cornish College of the Arts are moving forward with a significant merger that will reshape the educational landscape in Seattle. The two institutions have formally signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to unite, with Cornish set to become the Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University. This collaboration aims to enhance educational opportunities for students and promote innovative interdisciplinary projects among faculty. SU President Eduardo Peñalver emphasized the potential for expanded educational horizons as a key benefit of the merger. Cornish will continue to operate at its current South Lake Union campus, while the integration will require a thorough review of its finances, holdings, and operations.
The boards of trustees at both institutions have approved the LOI, marking an important first step in the integration process. A final agreement is expected by spring 2025, pending necessary approvals from educational regulators. This development follows Seattle University's recent acquisition of a substantial art collection valued at $300 million.
