Councilmember Morales Responds to Officer Firing, Calls for Police Reform

Seattle, WALocal News

Councilmember Tammy J. Morales released a statement in response to the Seattle Police Department's dismissal of Officer Daniel Auderer, who made reprehensible comments about the death of Jaahnavi Kandula. While Morales commended Chief Rahr for the decision, she asserted that this action alone does not address the deeper systemic issues within the SPD. She pointed out that there are still unresolved cases of police misconduct, including the lack of a disciplinary decision regarding Officer Kevin Dave, who caused Kandula's death. Morales also referenced the scandal involving a mock tombstone left in an SPD break room, which further damaged public trust.

The ongoing lawsuits alleging gender and racial discrimination within the department add to the urgency of reform. She emphasized that the city deserves a clear explanation and a comprehensive plan to enhance accountability and rebuild community trust. Morales concluded by affirming her commitment to pushing for necessary changes within the SPD. Ultimately, she believes that without a focus on culture and accountability, officers will struggle to perform their duties effectively.
