Seattle City Council passes legislation combatting commercial sexual exploitation - Seattle City Council Blog

Seattle, WALocal News

The Seattle City Council has passed a significant bill aimed at combating commercial sexual exploitation, with an 8-1 vote in favor. Spearheaded by Councilmember Cathy Moore, the legislation prohibits loitering for buying, selling, or promoting prostitution and allows judges to issue Stay Out of Area Prostitution (SOAP) orders. This legislative action is a direct response to community concerns regarding rising gun violence along Aurora Ave N, attributed to commercial sexual exploitation. Councilmember Moore expressed gratitude for the support received and emphasized the legislation's role in ensuring community safety. Key amendments were made during the discussions, including limiting SOAP orders to buyers and promoters, along with mandating police training on trauma-informed best practices.

Co-sponsor Council President Sara Nelson remarked on the urgent need for action given the violent nature of sex trafficking in the area. Additionally, Councilmember Maritza Rivera highlighted the bill's focus on protecting vulnerable women and minors while offering alternatives to traditional law enforcement methods. This comprehensive approach aims to disrupt criminal activities while prioritizing the safety and well-being of those affected.
