Seattle Public Utilities will roll out one free battery pick-up a year in 2026 And is sorting out how to include apartment dwellers

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) will roll out a free annual battery pickup beginning in April 2026, as part of an effort to enhance the Special Item Pickup service. This program aims to facilitate proper disposal of hazardous items and prevent dangerous materials from entering landfills. SPU will also work to include apartment residents, a significant challenge given the complexities of multifamily housing. Currently, residents can schedule pickups for a fee, but the new initiative will provide a free option to promote safe disposal practices. In 2027, the service will expand to cover large electronics and bulky furniture, further addressing illegal dumping concerns.

The city banned battery disposal in trash starting January 2024 to combat fire risks and environmental issues. SPU emphasizes that proper disposal will help prevent transfer station fires caused by batteries. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for sustainable waste management solutions in Seattle.
