Responding to backlash, SPD chief names new East Precinct Commander and LGBTQ liaison

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes appointed Jim Britt as the new East Precinct Commander and Haden Barton as the LGBTQ+ liaison after backlash regarding the promotion of Michael Tietjen, who has a controversial history. Community groups criticized Tietjen's selection due to past misconduct, including an incident in which he nearly struck protesters with his vehicle. Barnes acknowledged the lack of transparency in the selection process and apologized for the oversight, stating he took immediate action upon learning of Tietjen's history. The East Precinct has a troubling record of leadership turnover, with Britt stepping in amid a $400,000 plan to install new surveillance cameras in Capitol Hill. Barnes's announcement underscores the need for improved community engagement and trust within the department.

He also initiated a full review of SPD's promotion process to enhance transparency and accountability. The new appointments aim to foster a safer and more inclusive environment for all Seattle residents. Barnes reaffirmed his commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and to equitable policing practices.
