Rapid Madison bus among transit studies Council may cut

Seattle, WALocal News

The Seattle City Council is deliberating over Mayor McGinn's budget for 2013-14, considering cuts to high capacity transit projects worth $5 million. This includes the Madison bus rapid transit line, projected to serve 14,000 riders daily, with 6,200 being new users. The Transit Master Plan identifies the Madison corridor as a priority, but the council is contemplating reallocating funds to support underfunded bicycle and pedestrian plans or other bus corridors. The Madison line, expected to cost $81 million and likely using rapid electric trolley buses, aims to maintain efficient transit with new bus-only lanes. The Broadway streetcar extension, which would connect to the First Hill Streetcar, also remains underfunded by $23 million.

The council's budget-related votes begin on November 7, with the final budget set for adoption on November 19. Citizens can voice their opinions through email as budget discussions continue. The outcome will significantly impact future transit options in Seattle.
