In key vote, King County Council committee moves plan for 56M Broadway Crisis Care Center forward with promises on public safety and oversight

Seattle, WALocal News

The King County Council's budget committee has moved forward with plans for a $56 million Broadway Crisis Care Center, addressing critical mental health needs in the city. During the legislative session, officials underscored the urgency of providing resources as many individuals face mental health challenges in King County. Girmay Zahilay, a committee member and Executive candidate, expressed concerns about the limited access to care facilities. Public safety issues were raised by local property owners during a comment session, particularly regarding the center's proximity to schools. In response, Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda introduced an amendment requiring adherence to safety assessments and the formation of a citizen advisory committee.

This project is part of a larger $1. 25 billion plan to establish five mental health facilities throughout the county by 2030. The county hopes to finalize the purchase agreement for the former Polyclinic building by summer. Mayor Bruce Harrell's letter of conditional support emphasizes the need for collaboration with law enforcement to ensure safety around the center.
